Otoplasty is mostly performed for correction of prominent ear, also colloquially known as bat ear. The procedure can be performed after the age of 5 so that children can psychologically feel better before school age. If not performed during childhood, the procedure can be performed any time in the future. It is possible to perform the surgery under general anesthesia in children and under general or local anesthesia or sedation in adults.
The operation involves making an incision behind the ear to insert permanent stitches or reshape the ear cartilages. The operation is permanent and offers much more natural results thanks to the method I have developed, which involves repositioning of the ear muscle and application of special sutures that prevent opening of the upper part of the ear. Children may be required to stay in the hospital for one day after the surgery whereas adults can be discharged on the same day. For about 4-6 weeks after the surgery, special bandages are used to help maintain the created form of the ear. Prominent ear surgery, which has very high patient satisfaction, is one of the operations I perform quite frequently and with much enthusiasm.
