Most common tumors of the skin are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malign melanoma. These tumors develop as certain cells in various layers of the skin change character and become cancerous cells. As the head and the neck are most exposed to the sun, these tumors are more common in the head and neck region than other regions of the body. Solar rays, solarium rays and ultraviolet lamps may cause skin cancer. Other than these, skin cancer prevalence is high among people with genetic disorders, light colored skin, radiotherapy exposure, chronic wound and immune system deficiency.
Basal cell carcinoma is the most benign of these skin cancers and do not spread around the body, allowing for easy surgical removal.
Squamous cell carcinoma is the next type of skin cancer, which is likely to spread to the lymph nodes. The treatment involves surgical removal of the tumor with suitable contours and removal of the lymph nodes, if necessary.
Malign melanoma is the type of skin cancer with the worst prognosis. However, highly successful results are obtained if it is treated by competent, conscious and expert professionals.
The person should check their body and watch out for skin lesions not existing before. Any changes in an existing nevus may be a sign that these lesions are changing character.
